Here's Our Story

This is a direct appeal to all the good and decent people
who may take the time to read this.

The People of the Shawnee Nation, United Remnant Band seriously need your help.
Thirteen years ago in 1995, we purchased our Tribal business called Zane Shawnee Caverns and Campground. This small, seasonal business is a fun, family-oriented piece of paradise (97 acres) where we share our rich Native American heritage and culture through educational programs and entertainment. This acreage is the only American Indian owned and operated land/business in the state of Ohio. Financially, winter has always been our slow season, but with the declining economy this year, everything we have worked for is at stake. This piece of our traditional Shawnee homeland, that we had to buy back from the Americans, is in jeopardy of being taken away once again. It would be devastating to lose this special land. On this Indian-owned property there are graves of our ancient ancestors as well as graves of our people who have recently passed. Our traditional Great House (Shawnee Church) and our sacred ceremonial grounds where we practice our ancient and traditional ceremonies are located here. Our very unique and special Shawnee Woodland Native American Museum, home to thousands of artifacts and Indian art is on this land. Four of our tribal families also live here.
We have not missed a bank payment in over three years. Shawnee people are a proud people; we are not beggars nor are we lazy. We are doing everything we can to make it through this long winter. But WE NEED YOUR HELP! Please help us make it through this winter by making a Tax-Deductible donation to the Shawnee Nation, United Remnant Band (501-C3 Non-Profit). Even if your donation is just one dollar, it would at least tell us that someone cares. To make a donation, please click on the Pay-Pal button at the bottom of this Blog. When you fill out the Pay-Pal form, don‘t forget to print your tax-deductible receipt for tax purposes. If you are not comfortable with a monetary donation, we invite you to visit our Ebay store where you may purchase top-quality leather, leather goods, and other Native American-made crafts. http://stores.ebay.com/Shawnee-Nation-URB If you would like more information about the United Remnant Band Shawnee of Ohio, please visit our official Tribal website: http://zaneshawneecaverns.net/

  2. The Ohio lands have always represented paradise to Native people. Indians have lived in this part of our country for thousands of years. For centuries, fertile soil and abundant game afforded Native families good lives.

Chief Tecumseh died trying to protect Shawnee lands in Ohio. Since his death, warriors from the Shawnee Nation have struggled to protect their history, tradition, religion, and homeland.

In 1795, Zane's Tract was taken from Native people. Nearly 200 years to the day, the Shawnee Nation United Remnant Band was able to buy back their historic homelands.

We have bravely faced hardship and heart ache along the way. Hard work and sacrafice are the norm for our Tribe.

We have been financially responsible. We have never missed a land payment. The current economic conditions are creating problems for our seasonal business.

We are not asking for a bail out. We have much to offer. Our lands are open to the public as a place of respite and relaxation. Our doors are open to families and school children to learn history from the Native perspective and Native culture from our elders. Our outreach efforts promote peace, understanding, and universal acceptance.

We want to preserve our Shawnee homelands not for ourselves, but for future generations. As Americans, we can never allow this country to forget its past. As the First Americans, we can never allow our people to forget our heritage. We must honor our ancestors. We must protect Chief Tecumseh's dream of a Native homeland in Ohio.

  3. Touching but TRUE!!

I personally can attest to all that is said. I myself have dontated money and time for several years and not one dime or minute has ever been regreated. These people ARE very proud and extreamly hard workers to maintain their land and just simply survive. All have full time jobs, yet every extra minute that they have they are their working hard to maintain. Every weekend they (including all in their family) are their working together on projects that are necessary to survive. And yes winter is the hardest for them. It is simply a struggle to keep their customers warm as they visit. Not to mention the families that live there. Winter is hard in Ohio, but for them it is even harder.

Parents and children alike work together to hang onto what was taken away many years ago and bought back with their own money just to save it. The beauty of this land and the people is overwhelming........if their is anyway at all that you can help, PLEASE DO! It is a satisfaction beyond belief, physically, mentally and spiritually.

Like I said I have and I pray that you find it in your heart to also!!
